NEWS – Artist Who Spoke Up About Tiananmen ‘Beaten Unconscious’ in HK Toilet 1

Lee Wen, a visiting artist from Singapore, was allegedly beaten up and left unconscious in a bathroom on the campus of City University at around 7pm last night.

The 57-year-old was speaking at a seminar during Art Week and made reference to Chen Guang, a Tiananmen soldier-turned-artist who was recently arrested in the mainland. Lee also spoke of violence and lawlessness in China, urging change.

The photo of his injuries emerged on Facebook, posted by attendees of the seminar and his gallerist. He was warded at Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern overnight for observation. He cannot remember any details of the attack and a scan has found no blood clots.

Lee was released at lunchtime on Sunday and told reporter Helmi Yusof that he “didn’t feel a thing or see anyone approaching” and “just blanked out“. Police classified it as an assault case.

The performance artist is famous for his ‘Yellow Man’ role which exaggerates his identity and symbolises his struggle against stereotypes in his home city…

His work continues to be exhibited today at the Art Basel fair in Wanchai…
