Oldest cabinet yet: Team behind Hong Kong’s next leader Carrie Lam has a total combined age of 999

Chief Executive-elect Carrie Lam appears to have been blessed with another magic number.

After being selected as Hong Kong’s leader with 777 votes in March, Lam announced her new cabinet on Wednesday. Whilst she boasted a “new style of governance,” it was difficult ignore that only one member of the cabinet was recruited from outside the government, and only one was a woman.

Their age is another notable issue. The 17 top officials, including Lam and the 16 secretaries, have a total combined age of 999 – the oldest cabinet yet.

777: Chief exec-elect Carrie Lam’s vote count inspires obscene Cantonese puns

Chief executive-elect Carrie Lam’s victorious vote count of 777 in Hong Kong’s small-circle leadership election on Sunday has inspired obscene Cantonese puns.

The Cantonese word for “seven” is phonetically similar to an obscene word meaning “penis.” Thus “penis penis penis” began trending online shortly after the results were announced. As a verb or an adjective, the word also refers to “stupidity” or a “blunder.”

Video: Beauty vlogger gives makeup tutorial on how to look like CY Leung

A Hong Kong beauty vlogger has posted a makeup tutorial teaching others how to look like Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying. Joshi Fu posted in video earlier this year amid fears that the Copyright Amendment bill – also known as the “internet Article 23” – would be passed.

Throughout the video, Fu is merciless with her criticism of the Chief Executive and sneaks snarky and hilarious remarks into the subtitles whenever possible.

“689 isn’t afraid to show us his true face and how evil he really looks – he doesn’t need foundation,” she said.

‘Ain’t nobody got time for that’: CY Leung ridiculed for lunchtime harbour swimming idea

Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying has been ridiculed by netizens for suggesting that office workers in Central could go for a swim in the harbour if a harbourfront swimming area was set up near International Finance Centre (IFC).

Hong Kong and Kowloon Lifeguards Union spokesperson Kwok Chiu-kit mocked Leung for his “lack of common sense” as the Leisure and Cultural Services Department has warned people not to swim with a full stomach, reported Apple Daily.

Why 689 is the magic number

Many Hongkongers know 689 to be the nickname of Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying.

In 2012, Leung was elected to his post with just 689 votes from an election committee.

Leung is often heckled in the legislature by pan-democratic lawmakers – most notoriously by Wong Yuk-man – who enjoyed reminding him of the number.

It is commonly seen at protests….
